Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

Abstract Futuristic Background

What is it?

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a bulging or swelling in the lower part of the aorta, the major blood vessel that supplies blood to the body. The aneurysm can grow larger over time and, if it ruptures, it can cause life-threatening internal bleeding.

Ablatotech Clinical Trials

What are the symptoms?

  • Often asymptomatic in the early stages

  • Pulsating sensation in the abdomen

  • Abdominal or back pain (aching or severe)

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Sudden, severe pain in the abdomen or back (in case of rupture)

What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)

  • Kidney stones

  • Abdominal hernias

  • Pancreatitis

  • Gastrointestinal issues (e.g., peptic ulcer disease)

  • Back pain from other causes (e.g., muscle strain)

What are the aggravating factors?

  • High blood pressure

  • Smoking

  • Atherosclerosis (plaque build-up in arteries)

  • Age (older adults, especially over 65)

  • Family history of AAA

What types of food are helpful?

  • High-fiber diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) to help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., from fish like salmon or flaxseeds) to support cardiovascular health.

  • Low sodium intake to help control blood pressure.

  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on the heart and arteries.

  • Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine.

Sample Recipe: Omega-3 Rich Salmon Salad

Ingredients: 4 oz grilled salmon, mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, olive oil, lemon juice, chia seeds.

Directions: Toss mixed greens and vegetables, top with grilled salmon, sprinkle chia seeds, and dress with olive oil and lemon juice.

What are the traditional treatments?

  • Monitoring: If the aneurysm is small and asymptomatic, monitoring with regular imaging (ultrasound or CT scan).

  • Surgery: For larger aneurysms or if symptoms develop. Surgical options include open surgery or endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR).

  • Medications to control blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

What are the natural and alternative treatments?

  • Garlic and Hawthorn: Studies suggest these can help reduce cholesterol and improve cardiovascular function. Some animal studies show garlic may reduce the size of aneurysms, but human trials are limited.

  • Ginkgo Biloba: May have a role in improving blood circulation, though studies are not definitive regarding its effect on AAA.
