Acoustic Neuroma (Vestibular Schwannoma)

Abstract Futuristic Background

What is it?

An acoustic neuroma is a benign tumor that develops on the vestibulocochlear nerve, which is responsible for hearing and balance. The tumor typically grows slowly and can cause hearing loss, balance issues, and other neurological symptoms.

Ablatotech Clinical Trials

What are the symptoms?

  • Gradual hearing loss in one ear

  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)

  • Balance problems or dizziness

  • Facial numbness or weakness

  • Headaches

  • Nausea due to balance issues

What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)

  • Meniere’s disease

  • Labyrinthitis

  • Vestibular migraine

  • Otitis media (middle ear infection)

  • Brainstem stroke

What are the aggravating factors?

  • Genetics (e.g., Neurofibromatosis type 2)

  • Age (most commonly diagnosed in people between 30-60 years)

  • Family history of acoustic neuromas

What types of food are helpful?

  • A diet rich in antioxidants to support general brain and nerve health (e.g., leafy greens, berries).

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fatty fish, flaxseeds) may have protective properties for nerve health.

  • Hydration is important, especially for people experiencing balance issues or dizziness.

  • Limiting alcohol and caffeine if they exacerbate balance issues or tinnitus.

Sample Recipe: Antioxidant-Rich Berry Smoothie

  • Ingredients: 1 cup mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries), 1 tablespoon      flaxseeds, 1/2 cup Greek yogurt, 1 cup almond milk.

  • Directions: Blend all ingredients together until smooth.

What are the traditional treatments?

  • Observation: Small, asymptomatic tumors may be monitored with regular MRIs.

  • Surgical removal: To eliminate the tumor or reduce its size, depending on location and size.

  • Radiation therapy (stereotactic radiosurgery) for tumors that are difficult to access surgically.

  • Medications for symptoms like dizziness or nausea.

What are the natural and alternative treatments?

  • Ginkgo Biloba: Some studies suggest that ginkgo may help with tinnitus and improve circulation in the brain.

  • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): May help improve cellular energy production and support brain health, though more research is needed.

  • Acupressure or acupuncture: Preliminary studies suggest acupuncture may help manage symptoms like dizziness and tinnitus.
