Airway Stenosis (Tracheal Stenosis)

What is it?
Airway stenosis (or tracheal stenosis) is a narrowing of the windpipe (trachea), often caused by scarring from injury, infection, or surgery. This narrowing makes breathing difficult and can lead to respiratory distress.

What are the symptoms?
Shortness of breath
Wheezing or noisy breathing
Chronic cough
Difficulty breathing, especially with exertion
Frequent respiratory infections
Hoarseness or voice changes
What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Asthma
Laryngeal cancer
Vocal cord dysfunction
Tracheomalacia
What are the aggravating factors?
Previous surgery or trauma to the airway
Infection (such as tuberculosis or pneumonia)
Long-term use of a tracheostomy tube
Chronic inflammation (e.g., from smoking)
What types of food are helpful?
Soft, easy-to-swallow foods to avoid further irritation to the throat (e.g., soups, smoothies).
Anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric, ginger, and berries may help reduce airway inflammation.
Stay hydrated to keep mucus thin and easier to clear from the airway.
Sample Recipe: Anti-Inflammatory Ginger-Lemon Tea
Ingredients: Fresh ginger root, lemon juice, honey.
Directions: Boil water and steep fresh ginger for 10 minutes. Add lemon juice and honey to taste.
What are the traditional treatments?
Dilation of the airway via bronchoscopy or surgery.
Stent placement to keep the airway open.
Medication for underlying inflammation (e.g., corticosteroids).
In severe cases, a tracheostomy tube may be placed to aid breathing.
What are the natural and alternative treatments?
Licorice Root: Known for its soothing effects on the respiratory system.
Peppermint: May help relieve symptoms of airway irritation due to its menthol content.
Steam inhalation: Helps moisten and open airways, making it easier to breathe.
