Alport Syndrome

What is it?
Alport syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the kidneys, hearing, and eyes. It leads to kidney failure, hearing loss, and vision problems due to mutations in the collagen type IV genes.

What are the symptoms?
Hematuria (blood in the urine)
Proteinuria (protein in the urine)
High blood pressure
Hearing loss (progressive)
Eye problems (e.g., cataracts, retinopathy)
Kidney function decline, leading to kidney failure
What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)
Chronic kidney disease (due to diabetes or hypertension)
Glomerulonephritis
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)
IgA nephropathy
What are the aggravating factors?
Genetics (family history is the most significant factor)
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Progression of kidney damage over time
What types of food are helpful?
Low-sodium diet: Helps control blood pressure and fluid balance in the body.
Adequate protein intake: To maintain kidney health, but controlled in advanced kidney disease.
Anti-inflammatory foods: Omega-3 fatty acids (from fish like salmon) and antioxidants (from fruits and vegetables).
Sample Recipe: Kidney-Friendly Vegetable Stew
Ingredients: Carrots, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, garlic, spinach, olive oil, low-sodium vegetable broth.
Directions: Sauté onions and garlic in olive oil, add other vegetables and vegetable broth, simmer for 20 minutes until vegetables are tender.
What are the traditional treatments?
ACE inhibitors/ARBs: Medications to control blood pressure and reduce proteinuria.
Corticosteroids: In some cases, steroids are used to reduce kidney inflammation.
Dialysis: In cases of kidney failure.
Hearing aids: To manage hearing loss.
Kidney transplant: For individuals who develop end-stage kidney failure.
What are the natural and alternative treatments?
Omega-3 fatty acids: Found in fish oil, these can help reduce inflammation in the kidneys.
Nettle leaf: May help with urinary tract health and inflammation.
Vitamin D: Essential for kidney health, especially as kidney function declines.
Curcumin: The active compound in turmeric has anti-inflammatory effects that may help with kidney inflammation.
