Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD)

What is it?
Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD), also known as Samter’s Triad, is a condition in which individuals with asthma experience worsening respiratory symptoms after taking aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is also associated with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps.

What are the symptoms?
Asthma symptoms worsening after taking aspirin or NSAIDs (e.g., wheezing, shortness of breath)
Nasal congestion and sinus pressure
Loss of smell (anosmia)
Recurrent sinus infections
Nasal polyps
What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)
Asthma (without AERD)
Chronic rhinosinusitis
Allergic rhinitis
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
What are the aggravating factors?
Consumption of aspirin or NSAIDs
Respiratory infections
Environmental allergens (e.g., dust, pollen)
Exposure to cold air or strong odors
What types of food are helpful?
Anti-inflammatory diet: Emphasize foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., salmon, walnuts) and antioxidants (e.g., berries, leafy greens).
Avoid food triggers: If there are any food allergies or sensitivities (e.g., to certain additives or preservatives).
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to thin mucus and ease congestion.
Sample Recipe: Salmon with Spinach and Sweet Potato
Ingredients: Salmon, sweet potato, spinach, olive oil.
Directions: Roast the sweet potato, grill the salmon, and sauté spinach with olive oil for a heart-healthy meal.
What are the traditional treatments?
Avoidance of NSAIDs: Avoid aspirin and other NSAIDs to prevent symptoms from worsening.
Corticosteroids: Oral or nasal steroids to reduce inflammation and treat sinus issues.
Leukotriene modifiers: Such as montelukast, to reduce inflammation and control asthma.
Nasal polyps surgery: To remove polyps that obstruct airflow.
What are the natural and alternative treatments?
Turmeric: Contains curcumin, which may have anti-inflammatory effects that could help reduce respiratory symptoms.
Ginger: Known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, ginger may help soothe the respiratory tract.
Acupuncture: Some studies suggest acupuncture can help alleviate asthma and sinus issues, though more research is needed.
