Cataract

What is it?
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye, leading to a decrease in vision. It is a common condition, especially in older adults, and can eventually cause blindness if untreated.

What are the symptoms?
Blurry or cloudy vision
Difficulty seeing at night
Sensitivity to light and glare
Fading or yellowing of colors
Double vision in one eye
What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)
Glaucoma
Macular degeneration
Diabetic retinopathy
Eye infections or inflammations
What are the aggravating factors?
Age (common in older adults)
Smoking
Diabetes
Excessive exposure to sunlight
High blood pressure
Long-term use of corticosteroids
What types of food are helpful?
Antioxidant-rich foods: Vitamin C, E, and beta-carotene (found in oranges, spinach, carrots, and sweet potatoes) may help prevent cataracts or slow progression.
Lutein and zeaxanthin: Found in leafy greens and egg yolks, these antioxidants are important for eye health.
Omega-3 fatty acids: May reduce the risk of cataracts and other eye diseases (found in fish like salmon and flaxseeds).
Sample Recipe: Spinach and Kale Salad with Grilled Chicken
Ingredients: Spinach, kale, grilled chicken, olive oil, lemon juice.
Directions: Toss fresh spinach and kale with grilled chicken, olive oil, and lemon juice for a nutrient-rich salad.
What are the traditional treatments?
Surgical removal: The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens (intraocular lens).
Vision correction: Glasses or contact lenses can be used temporarily to manage vision changes before surgery.
What are the natural and alternative treatments?
Lutein and zeaxanthin supplements: These may protect against cataract formation.
Vitamin C: High doses of vitamin C might help prevent cataract progression, though more research is needed.
Bilberry extract: Known for improving night vision and overall eye health.
