Compression Fracture

What is it?
A compression fracture occurs when a bone in the spine (vertebra) breaks or collapses due to pressure. These fractures are common in people with osteoporosis, but can also result from trauma or cancer.

What are the symptoms?
Sudden, severe back pain
Decreased height
Limited range of motion in the back
Muscle spasms
Kyphosis (abnormal curvature of the spine)
What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)
Herniated disc
Spinal tumor
Osteoarthritis
Muscle strain
What are the aggravating factors?
Osteoporosis or bone thinning
Aging (bones become more brittle with age)
Trauma or injury (e.g., falls, accidents)
Chronic steroid use (can weaken bones)
What types of food are helpful?
Calcium and vitamin D: Essential for bone health (e.g., dairy products, leafy greens, fortified foods).
Protein: Important for bone and muscle repair (e.g., lean meats, beans, nuts).
Magnesium: Helps maintain bone density (e.g., whole grains, nuts, seeds).
Sample Recipe: Spinach and Mushroom Omelette
Ingredients: Eggs, spinach, mushrooms, olive oil, cheese (optional).
Directions: Sauté the spinach and mushrooms, then make an omelette to pack in protein and vitamins for bone health.
What are the traditional treatments?
Pain management: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or pain relievers.
Bracing: To stabilize the spine during healing.
Physical therapy: To improve posture and strengthen back muscles.
Surgery: In severe cases, vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty may be done to stabilize the vertebra.
What are the natural and alternative treatments?
Weight-bearing exercise: Regular exercise like walking or strength training can help maintain bone density.
Vitamin D supplementation: Helps with calcium absorption and bone health.
Herbal supplements: Such as horsetail (rich in silica), which may promote bone health.
