Amoebiasis

What is it?

Amoebiasis is a parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. It typically affects the intestines and can lead to dysentery, liver abscesses, and other complications, especially in tropical regions with poor sanitation.

  • Immunocompromised individuals: Higher risk for severe infection.

  • Poor sanitation: Living in areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation.

What types of food are helpful?

  • Hydration: Oral rehydration salts (ORS) to replace fluids lost from diarrhea.

  • Light diet: Simple foods such as rice, boiled potatoes, and toast to ease digestion.

  • Probiotic-rich foods: Yogurt or kefir to restore gut flora after treatment.

Sample Recipe: Simple Rice Porridge

  • 1 cup rice

  • 2 cups water

  • A pinch of salt

  • Boil the rice until soft and mushy, then serve with a little honey for taste.

What are the traditional treatments?

  • Antiprotozoal medications: Metronidazole is the most common treatment.

  • Supportive care: Fluid replacement to prevent dehydration from diarrhea.
