Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM)

What is it?

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal tangles of blood vessels where arteries connect directly to veins, bypassing the capillary system. These malformations can disrupt blood flow and lead to hemorrhaging, stroke, or organ damage.

What are the symptoms?

  • Headaches

  • Seizures

  • Bleeding or hemorrhaging (in severe cases)

  • Numbness or weakness in limbs

  • Vision problems (if located near the brain)

  • Brain or spinal cord dysfunction (if located in these areas)

What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)

  • Brain aneurysm

  • Stroke

  • Venous malformation

  • Cavernous malformation

What are the aggravating factors?

  • High blood pressure

  • Trauma or injury to the AVM area

  • Genetic factors (familial AVM conditions)

  • Pregnancy (can increase blood flow and exacerbate symptoms)

What types of food are helpful?

  • Anti-inflammatory foods: Such as fatty fish, olive oil, and green leafy vegetables.

  • Magnesium-rich foods: To support blood vessel health.

  • Antioxidants: A diet high in fruits and vegetables, especially berries, to combat oxidative stress.

Sample Recipe: Salmon with Roasted Vegetables

  • Ingredients: Salmon, carrots, bell peppers, broccoli, olive oil, lemon.

  • Directions: Roast vegetables and serve with grilled salmon for a heart-healthy meal.

What are the traditional treatments?

  • Surgical removal: To remove the AVM and restore normal blood flow.

  • Embolization: A procedure where the blood vessels of the AVM are blocked to stop blood      flow.

  • Radiation therapy: To shrink or destroy the AVM in certain cases.

What are the natural and alternative treatments?

  • Vitamin E: Acts as an antioxidant and may help protect blood vessels from damage.

  • Ginkgo biloba: Known for improving circulation and possibly helping in managing AVM-related symptoms.

  • Magnesium: Helps maintain blood vessel function and prevent spasms.
