Meniere's Disease
What is it?
Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that causes episodes of vertigo (dizziness), hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear. It is thought to be caused by an abnormal buildup of fluid in the inner ear, affecting balance and hearing.

What are the symptoms?
Severe, recurrent vertigo (spinning sensation)
Fluctuating hearing loss, often in one ear
Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing sound)
A feeling of fullness or pressure in the affected ear
Nausea and vomiting (during vertigo episodes)
What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)
Vestibular migraine
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
Acoustic neuroma (tumor on the vestibulocochlear nerve)
Labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis
What are the aggravating factors?
Stress: Emotional stress can trigger or worsen episodes of Meniere's disease.
Salt intake: High sodium levels may exacerbate fluid retention in the inner ear.
Caffeine and alcohol: These can trigger or worsen symptoms in some individuals.
What types of food are helpful?
Low-sodium diet: Reducing salt intake may help manage symptoms.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain balance.
Avoid triggers: Limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption may prevent flare-ups.
Sample Recipe: Grilled Chicken Salad with Avocado and Quinoa
Ingredients: Grilled chicken, quinoa, avocado, mixed greens, olive oil, lemon juice.
Directions: Serve grilled chicken over a quinoa salad with avocado and greens for a healthy, low-sodium meal.
What are the traditional treatments?
Medications: Diuretics to reduce fluid retention, anti-nausea medications, or anti-vertigo drugs.
Lifestyle changes: Reducing salt intake, managing stress, and avoiding caffeine and alcohol.
Vestibular rehabilitation: Exercises that help the brain compensate for balance issues.
Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be required to reduce fluid buildup or address balance issues.
What are the natural and alternative treatments?
Ginger: Known for its anti-nausea properties, ginger may help with dizziness and nausea during vertigo episodes.
Acupressure: Some find relief from symptoms through acupressure or acupuncture.
Herbal remedies: Herbs like ginkgo biloba may support inner ear health.
