Metabolic Acidosis

What is it?

Metabolic acidosis is a condition in which the body produces too much acid, or when the kidneys are not able to remove enough acid from the body. This leads to a lower pH level in the blood, which can disrupt normal bodily functions.

What are the symptoms?

  • Rapid breathing (Kussmaul respirations)

  • Fatigue

  • Confusion

  • Shortness of breath

  • Headache

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Increased heart rate

What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)

  • Respiratory acidosis

  • Kidney disease (chronic kidney disease, acute kidney failure)

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis

  • Lactic acidosis

What are the aggravating factors?

  • Chronic kidney disease: Impaired kidney function can lead to a buildup of acids.

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis: Often seen in people with poorly controlled diabetes.

  • Alcohol poisoning or binge drinking: Excessive alcohol can lead to lactic acid buildup.

  • Severe diarrhea: Can lead to loss of bicarbonate, contributing to acidosis.

What types of food are helpful?

  • Avoid acid-forming foods: Limiting animal protein, processed foods, and foods high in refined sugars can help manage acidosis.

  • Increase alkaline foods: Foods like vegetables, fruits, and legumes can help maintain a more balanced pH in the body.

  • Stay hydrated: Adequate water intake supports kidney function and overall metabolism.

Sample Recipe: Alkaline Green Smoothie

  • Ingredients: Kale, spinach, cucumber, lemon, ginger, and coconut water.

  • Directions: Blend these ingredients together for an alkaline boost and to promote kidney health.

What are the traditional treatments?

  • Bicarbonate therapy: Sodium bicarbonate may be administered to help neutralize excess acids in the blood.

  • Dialysis: In cases of kidney failure, dialysis may be necessary to remove excess acid.

  • Treating underlying causes: Managing diabetes, improving kidney function, or addressing the cause of lactic acidosis.

What are the natural and alternative treatments?

  • Apple cider vinegar: A small amount can help balance pH levels in the body, though it should be used cautiously.

  • Magnesium supplements: Magnesium may help support kidney function and reduce acid buildup.

  • Probiotics: May support gut health and balance metabolic processes that influence acid production.
