Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
What is it?
A patent foramen ovale is a hole in the heart that didn’t close after birth. While it’s often harmless, it can increase the risk of stroke in certain individuals if blood clots pass through the hole from the right to the left side of the heart.

What are the symptoms?
Stroke-like symptoms (if blood clots pass through the hole)
Shortness of breath
Fatigue
Irregular heartbeat
Chest pain (in rare cases)
What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)
Atrial septal defect (ASD)
Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
Migraine with aura (in some cases, PFO is associated with migraines)
What are the aggravating factors?
Family history: Inherited risk of heart defects.
Blood clots: People with PFO are at higher risk for stroke if they have other blood clotting conditions.
What types of food are helpful?
Heart-healthy foods: Such as omega-3-rich fish, olive oil, and nuts.
Low-sodium diet: To maintain blood pressure and reduce strain on the heart.
Avoid excessive alcohol: Can contribute to irregular heart rhythms.
Sample Recipe: Salmon with Olive Oil and Vegetables
Ingredients: Salmon, olive oil, garlic, broccoli, carrots.
Directions: Bake salmon and serve with sautéed vegetables for a heart-healthy meal.
What are the traditional treatments?
Blood thinners: To reduce the risk of clot formation.
Surgical closure: In certain cases, a device can be used to close the hole in the heart.
What are the natural and alternative treatments?
Coenzyme Q10: May help with heart health and overall circulation.
Garlic: Known for its cardiovascular benefits.
