What are the symptoms?

  • Chronic diarrhea

  • Malnutrition

  • Weight loss

  • Dehydration

  • Fatigue

  • Stomach bloating

What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)

  • Celiac disease: An autoimmune condition that damages the small intestine lining, impairing nutrient absorption.

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): A functional gastrointestinal disorder that may mimic some symptoms of short bowel syndrome.

  • Crohn's disease: Inflammatory bowel disease that can cause similar symptoms, like diarrhea and weight loss.

What are the aggravating factors?

  • Inadequate diet: A diet low in nutrients and fiber can worsen malnutrition.

  • Infection or illness: Infections can exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms.

  • Stress: Stress can lead to gastrointestinal flare-ups and exacerbate symptoms.

What types of food are helpful?

  • Small, frequent meals: Helps with digestion and nutrient absorption.

  • Low-fiber, low-fat foods: Easier on the digestive system.

  • Electrolyte-rich drinks: To prevent dehydration and maintain fluid balance.

Sample Recipe: Banana and Rice Porridge

  • Ingredients: Rice, banana, water, a pinch of salt.

  • Directions: Cook rice with water, then mash the banana and mix for a soothing, easily digestible porridge.

What are the traditional treatments?

  • Parenteral nutrition (PN): Intravenous feeding for patients who cannot absorb enough nutrients through the digestive system.

  • Dietary adjustments: Low-fat and easily digestible foods.

  • Medications: To manage symptoms like diarrhea, acid reflux, or bacterial overgrowth in the gut.

What are the natural and alternative treatments?

  • Probiotics: Can help balance gut bacteria and improve digestion.

  • Digestive enzymes: To help break down food and absorb nutrients.

  • Herbal teas: Ginger or peppermint tea can help soothe the stomach and reduce bloating.
