Vertebral Fracture

What is it?

A vertebral fracture occurs when one of the bones (vertebrae) in the spine breaks. This can be due to trauma, osteoporosis, or other conditions that weaken bones.

What are the symptoms?

  • Severe back pain.

  • Difficulty moving or bending.

  • Loss of height (as the spine compresses).

  • Deformity or visible curvature of the spine.

  • Numbness or weakness if nerves are affected.

What else could it be? (Differential diagnosis)

  • Osteoporosis: A condition that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures.

  • Spinal tumor: Abnormal growths in the spine can cause pain and weakness.

  • Herniated disc: A condition where the cushioning discs between vertebrae slip out of place, causing pain.

What are the aggravating factors?

  • Osteoporosis: Increases the risk of fractures due to weakened bones.

  • Trauma or injury: A fall or car accident can cause vertebral fractures.

  • Age: Bone density decreases with age, increasing the likelihood of fractures.

What types of food are helpful?

  • Calcium and vitamin D: Vital for bone health. Include dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods in your diet.

  • Magnesium: Helps with bone formation and can be found in nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

  • Protein: Essential for bone repair and muscle strength. Include lean meats, legumes, and eggs in your diet.

What are the traditional treatments?

  • Pain medications: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or stronger pain relievers may be used.

  • Bracing: A back brace can help support the spine and reduce pain.

  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to stabilize the spine.

  • Physical therapy: Helps strengthen muscles and improve mobility.

What are the natural and alternative treatments?

  • Turmeric: Contains curcumin, which may help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

  • Ginger: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Epsom salt baths: Can relax muscles and help with pain relief.
